At Smart City Networks, we take immense pride in the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our team members. Several veterans who have served in various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces are among them. Their stories of bravery, dedication, and sacrifice are inspiring, and it was enlightening to learn about them throughout Military Appreciation Month. This Memorial Day, we are honored to share their journeys and acknowledge their contributions to our country. Read on to hear more about our team members and the various branches they have served.
A Journey from High School to the National Guard
Gamil Abd-Elmalek, a Network Administrator, took a bold step by enlisting in the NV Army National Guard while still in high school. Less than a week after graduating, he was on his way to boot camp. Upon returning from training, Gamil began studying and earning various IT certifications while working towards his career in the Technology field. Even while deployed, he continued to gain valuable experience and earn credentials that have helped him excel in his role at Smart City Networks.
Dedication to the Air Force
Kenneth Nguyen, Jacob Huerta, and Omar Santiago, all Technicians at Smart City Networks, have distinguished backgrounds in the U.S. Air Force. Kenneth served for four years, Jacob dedicated six years from 2017 to 2023, and Omar, an E5 Staff Sergeant, spent eight years in service.
Brian Clear, our General Manager at the Minneapolis Convention Center, celebrates an impressive 11 years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force. His extensive service highlights his deep-seated dedication and expertise, qualities that benefit our team immensely. Rob Cartagine, our Director of Software Development, also brings valuable experience from his five years in the Air Force, contributing significantly to our technological advancements and overall success.
Commitment to the Army
At Smart City Networks, we are proud to have team members who have served in the U.S. Army with dedication and honor. Joe Melancon, General Manager at the Seattle Convention Center, served four years in the U.S. Army. Robert Baker, a Technician, spent six years as an Infantryman in the Army. Kelli Bonds, our Office Manager, also served in the Army for four years. Their military service has shaped them into the exceptional professionals they are today, and we are grateful for their contributions both to our country and our company.
Resilience and Remembrance in the Navy
Arnold Chavez, General Manager at the Duke Energy Convention Center, has a poignant story from his time in the Navy. Just under three years into his service, he narrowly escaped a tragic accident on the USS Iwo Jima in 1990. Transferred back to Norfolk Naval Station in Virginia for scheduled training, Arnold was spared from the incident that claimed the lives of ten of his fellow sailors. The experience, which he describes as “survivor guilt,” remains with him to this day, a solemn reminder of the bonds and sacrifices shared among military personnel. We thank him for sharing such a personal experience
Michael Brown, a Technician, served four years in the U.S. Navy. Tommie Beltz, General Manager at America’s Center, has a unique military background with four years of active duty and three years in the reserves in the U.S. Navy.
David King, a Technician, served as a Master-At-Arms in the U.S. Navy from 2014 to 2021. His first duty station in Virginia involved providing static security for ships overseas, a role that took him to Spain, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Greece, and Italy. Later, stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, David provided small boat security for assets transiting the harbor. His service afforded him lifelong memories and invaluable experiences. Now, as a college student, David is grateful for the opportunities his military career has provided him.
Courage in the Marine Corps
Dewayne Martin, a Systems Engineer, served in the United States Marine Corps for six years. He participated in significant combat operations, including the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993, also known as the Black Hawk Down incident. Dewayne’s bravery and resilience in the face of danger are truly commendable. Guillermo Huerta Garcia, a Customer Sales and Service Manager, also served in the Marine Corps for six years, demonstrating dedication and commitment throughout his service.
At Smart City Networks, we are honored to work alongside these incredible individuals. Their military service has instilled in them qualities of leadership, resilience, and dedication that continue to inspire us every day. This Memorial Day and Military Appreciation Month, we extend our deepest gratitude to all our veterans and active-duty military personnel.
