Smart City Spotlight: Alexia Puckett – General Manager

Smart City Networks’ Alexia Puckett is the General Manager at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Ohio. Since joining the company in 2017, Alexia has risen through the ranks, bringing her strong work ethic and dedication to every role she takes on. Now, as General Manager, she continues to lead with the same commitment to excellence, ensuring top-notch service and connectivity for every event at the convention center. We sat down with her to talk about her Smart City journey. Alexia, this is your spotlight!

Hi Alexia! I’m curious to know a little about your background. How did you wind up at Smart City?

A: I grew up in Columbus and started working at a local pizza shop. After searching for a new opportunity, I landed at Smart City as a Customer Service Representative in 2017 and have been here ever since.

I know there have been a few big changes at your center, and now you find yourself General Manager. Could you speak on that shift and how you’ve adapted to your new position and responsibilities?

A: With the knowledge of (previous General Manager) Bill Duke transferring to Tampa, he was able to prepare me for most of the responsibilities I would take on in his absence. It was a tremendous help knowing what was expected from me if I were to be promoted. With the support of the Smart City team, I am adapting well and look forward to learning and bettering myself every day in this position.

What does your job entail? How would you describe your day-to-day activities?

A: My job entails working with clients from start to finish, installing and troubleshooting services, attending building and client meetings, ensuring all documentation is entered into our system, and more.

Do you have a favorite part of your job?

A: I love working on all the different events. It’s amazing to see them come to life after years of planning. Most planners are not familiar with internet terms and services, so it’s rewarding to be able to offer my knowledge and relieve that stress for them.

How would you describe your team culture in Columbus?

A: Columbus’s team culture is different from most centers. There is only a GM and a technician. Mark, our technician, is always willing to take on a new role and help with anything he can. We are a small team, but with communication and dedication, we work well together.

What do you like most about your convention center?

A: The art—almost every wall has a unique piece of art. The GCCC Art collection is part of the largest contemporary collection of Central Ohio art.

How would you describe the relationship between Smart City and the Greater Columbus Convention Center? What is it like to work together to provide the best customer service and connectivity for shows?

A: Our relationship with the GCCC is great. We work with the event managers for every event, if an issue arises, they can reach out to us immediately to resolve it in a timely manner. I also attend the building’s weekly production meeting to make sure we are all on the same page.

Have you had a favorite event so far?

A: My favorite event is Cultivate, they transform the building with beautiful flowers and plants. We have a great relationship with the client, so it is always a smooth and successful event that I look forward to every year.

Have there been any instances you can think of where you have used one of our 10 Business Principles in the Workplace?

A: “Do Right by All Our Customers” is one I use often. If I feel there is a better option for a customer, I will always offer my input. It shows you care about them and value their business and partnership.

What advice would you give to new hires who are starting with Smart City?

A: Be open to learning new things even if it is not a part of your job description. There is always room for growth, and you may have opportunities that you never imagined for yourself.

To wrap things up, what is something fun that people don’t know about you?

A: Everyone’s definition of fun is different. I really enjoy being around my family, going to concerts, camping, and trying new restaurants!
