SCN - Michael Gartrell

Hi Michael! Let’s start with your background. Where did you get started and have you always been passionate about the events industry?
M: I have an Associate of Applied Science: Information Technology Security, and Certificate of Technology: Computer Information Technology – Information Technology Security. My dad has owned his own website development company for over 25 years, so I feel I have been exposed to tech in my family from a young age.

What first drew you to Smart City?
M: What first drew me to the company was its strong presence and reputation in the event industry. I have always been passionate about creating memorable experiences, and I was excited by the innovative events the company produces such as the NFL and Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo.

Do you have a favorite part of your job?
M: What I enjoy most about my job is the flexibility I receive from management, which allows me to balance my responsibilities effectively. Additionally, working alongside such talented and capable colleagues (Davinnson Escobar, Randy Arenas, and Jesse Sanchez) makes my role much easier, as their expertise and teamwork create a supportive and efficient environment.

How would you describe your team culture at NRG Park?
M: Our team culture is built on self-sufficiency and mutual support. Each of us is strong in our individual roles, and we can rely on one another to maintain operations seamlessly, even if one team member is absent.

Have you had a favorite event so far? What made it fun?
M: Back in early 2020, I got the pleasure to travel to Miami’s Convention Center for the Superbowl Fan Experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work at a high-profile event. It was a valuable experience that allowed me to gain exposure to a dynamic environment. What made it fun for me was the people/team. Their insights and teamwork truly enhanced the overall experience. (Andrew Brown, Bill Duke, and Brian Clear)

How would you describe the relationship between Smart City and NRG Park?
M: Our team maintains a strong, positive relationship with building personnel, and we prioritize keeping key stakeholders, including Texans, ASM Global, and Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, satisfied. This collaborative approach ensures smooth operations and mutual success.

What do you like most about your Convention Center?
M: What I enjoy most about working at this facility is the opportunity to be involved in events that align with my personal interests as a sports and gaming fan. We’re fortunate to host major events at our stadium like Riot Games, Final Four College Basketball Tournament, and the College Football National Championship, which makes the work even more exciting and rewarding.

What advice would you give to new hires who are starting with Smart City?
M: For new hires, my advice would be to embrace opportunities to travel and learn from others. By doing so, you can gain valuable insights and adopt the best qualities and practices from colleagues, which will help you grow both professionally and personally.

To wrap things up, what is something fun that people don’t know about you?
M: One fun fact that people may not know about me is that I had the honor of winning a Junior College National Championship in baseball. Getting the ring and storming the pitcher’s mound and dog piling is something I will never forget.
